Monitoring and evaluating Uruguay’s new law regulating cannabis

On 10 December 2013, Uruguay’s Senate approved a legislation to legally regulate the production, sale and consumption of cannabis for recreational use. This side event will be an opportunity for Uruguay’s National Drugs Board to present the country’s new legislation, and open constructive debates on the implications of such policy at the national and international level. The event will also feature representatives from the US states of Washington and Colorado, where ballot initiatives to legally regulate the cannabis market have also been approved. Finally, the new report “The Rise and Decline of Cannabis Prohibition” about the history of cannabis in the UN drug control system and options for reform will be presented.
