Global Partnership on Drug Policies and Development (GPDPD)
The Global Partnership on Drug Policies and Development (GPDPD) is a global and multi-sectoral programme implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft fu?r Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). GPDPD further partners with the Federal Ministry of Health, the Federal Drug Commissioner, the Federal Foreign Office, the Federal Ministry of the Interior. The partnership implements its projects jointly with selected international organizations and NGOs – including TNI and the International Drug Policy Consortium (IDPC).
The overall objective of the GPDPD is that international drug policies change their orientation, both in terms of reducing illicit drug crop production as well as in dealing with drug users. The programme seeks to establish and politically entrench sound rural development and health policies in dealing with drugs, and to reinforce these at the United Nations and at country level. In doing so, the programme also contributes to the formation of an innovative alliance of like-minded countries in order to advocate for these more humane and more effective approaches.
In November 2015, an expert meeting was convened in Bangkok, Thailand by BMZ, GIZ, UNODC, the Mae Fah Luang Foundation and TNI – entitled “Taking Development Seriously: Alternative Development in the UNGASS 2016 Process”.

In February 2016, an expert meeting was convened in Berlin, Germany by GIZ on behalf of BMZ and the Federal Drug Commissioner, jointly with IDPC – entitled “New Approaches on Harm Reduction”.

Further meetings and outputs are planned for 2016 and beyond, to follow-up from the UNGASS discussions and map out a path towards the next UN high level meeting on drugs in 2019.
